Bike for a Better San Diego!
We envision a region where riding a bike is so safe, easy, and joyful that everyone feels comfortable doing it.
Picture cities, towns, and rural areas where parents don’t worry when their kids bike to school, seniors can ride to the park, and trips to the beach, work, or a friend’s house can be done on two wheels without fear.
Our ultimate goal is that safe, bike-friendly streets have simply become the norm throughout San Diego County.
How do we get there from here?
-
In 2025, our Vision Zero focus is Getting Kids to School Safely. To do this, we are advocating to fix the “Fatal 15” most dangerous intersections in the City of San Diego and address the flaws in the 6% of regional roadways where 54% of collisions occur.
Our partners in this quest are Families for Safe Streets San Diego, Circulate San Diego, and the Vision Zero Coalition.
-
Encouraging drivers to consider replacing car trips with bike trips or walking is challenging when they don’t feel safe or comfortable getting where they need to go by bike.
Our second goal is to identify the most critical missing links and advocate for SANDAG and the county’s cities to address these gaps.
In the meantime, we offer classes that help cyclists navigate the incomplete connections we DO have so they can start biking now.
-
At one time, shared bikes and scooters proliferated in Downtown San Diego. Now, the only bikeshares that exist are isolated on college campuses or within military complexes.
What if every municipality used the same docked bikeshare system, so you could cycle between San Ysidro and Imperial Beach or Oceanside and Vista without concern for crossing a municipal boundary?
-
By 2035, in the City of San Diego, 10% of all trips will be bicycle trips. Why not extend that goal to the entire County? It’s a lofty but worthy aim, considering the current stats are around 1%. Succeeding with goals 1-3 will enable us to reach goal 4.
-
Cycling is a great way to get around, so learning how to ride a bike and communicate with drivers and respect pedestrians while doing so should be built into Physical Education curriculums.
